How NUST GPA and CGPA are calculated
NUST grades on a curve. Your letter comes from where you land against your own class, not from a fixed percentage table. The same 78% can be a B+ in one section and a B in another. So this NUST GPA calculator starts from the letter grade you were actually given, instead of trying to turn marks into grades.
The part that catches people out is that NUST awards no minus grades at all. There is no A-, no B- and no C-. The scale steps in halves: A (4.00), B+ (3.50), B (3.00), C+ (2.50), C (2.00), D+ (1.50), D (1.00) and F. Most calculators quietly use the eleven-grade HEC table with A- at 3.67, and every CGPA they give a NUST student is wrong.
Add one semester at a time, one row per course. You get each semester's SGPA next to the running CGPA up to that semester. You can also export the whole record as a transcript-style PDF.
The Formula
SGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // one semesterCGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // all semestersAn F scores 0.00 grade points, but its credit hours stay in the divisor. It hits your average from both sides. Results are rounded to two decimal places.
Worked Examples
Example 1: one semester's SGPA
A 14-credit-hour semester using NUST's half-step grade points.
| Calculus, 3 CH, A (4.00) | 3 × 4.00 = 12.00 |
|---|---|
| Programming Fundamentals, 4 CH, B+ (3.50) | 4 × 3.50 = 14.00 |
| Applied Physics, 3 CH, B (3.00) | 3 × 3.00 = 9.00 |
| Communication Skills, 2 CH, A (4.00) | 2 × 4.00 = 8.00 |
| Islamic Studies, 2 CH, C+ (2.50) | 2 × 2.50 = 5.00 |
| Total grade points | 12.00 + 14.00 + 9.00 + 8.00 + 5.00 = 48.00 |
| Total credit hours | 3 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 2 = 14 |
Example 2: what the missing minus grades cost you
A 3-credit course where the curve puts you just below an A, compared with a university that awards an A-.
| At NUST the next grade down is B+ | 3 × 3.50 = 10.50 |
|---|---|
| On an eleven-grade scale it would be A- | 3 × 3.67 = 11.01 |
| Difference on one course | 11.01 − 10.50 = 0.51 |
National University of Sciences & Technology Grading Scale
NUST letter grades and their grade points. There is no marks column on purpose. Under relative grading the percentage behind each letter moves with every section's curve, so a fixed marks-to-grade table would be wrong more often than right. Note that the scale has no minus grades at all.
| Grade | Grade Points |
|---|---|
| A | 4.00 |
| B+ | 3.50 |
| B | 3.00 |
| C+ | 2.50 |
| C | 2.00 |
| D+ | 1.50 |
| D | 1.00 |
| F | 0.00 |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does NUST really have no A- grade?
Correct. The NUST scale has eight levels: A, B+, B, C+, C, D+, D and F. It steps in 0.50, not the .67 and .33 steps most HEC-aligned universities use. There is no A-, B- or C-. If a calculator offers you an A- for a NUST course, it is not using the NUST scale.
Why can't I enter marks instead of a letter grade?
Because NUST grades relatively, there is no fixed percentage behind a letter. Your grade depends on your class's distribution, so the same mark can give different letters in different sections or semesters. A calculator that converts NUST marks to grades is guessing. This one uses the letter your transcript shows.
I'm in SADA and my course had fixed percentage bands. Does this still work?
Yes. The School of Art, Design and Architecture is the documented exception, where some courses use absolute grading with fixed percentage ranges. The letters awarded and their grade points are still the NUST scale. Enter the letter from your transcript and the arithmetic is the same.
Does an F count towards my NUST CGPA?
Yes, and it is costly. An F gives 0.00 grade points while its credit hours stay in the divisor. A failed 3-credit course in a 15-credit semester pulls the SGPA down by about 0.60, even if everything else went well.
How do I handle W, I or other non-graded results?
Leave them out. NUST transcripts show results such as W for a dropped course and I for incomplete. These carry no grade points, and their credit hours are not counted towards the CGPA either. The grade dropdown only offers real letter grades for this reason. Leaving the row out gives the correct answer.
What CGPA do I need to graduate from NUST?
It depends on the programme. Engineering, IT and science degrees generally need a 2.00 CGPA. Several BS programmes in business and social sciences need 2.50. Falling below 2.00 puts you on probation, so aim comfortably above whichever floor applies to your degree.
